Like many Christmas traditions, bells were first used during pagan winter festivals. Their purpose was to protect the townspeople from evil spirits. Because of their sonic vibration, bells can clear a space of negative energy and invite good energy to enter. They have been used for centuries for this purpose. I particularly like to hang bells on all the doors in my house that open to the outside.
